Steptoe & Johnson PLLC announced that Ohio University alum Ben M. McFarland has joined the firm’s litigation team. McFarland’s practice will focus on professional liability as well as energy litigation. He will practice in the firm’s Wheeling, WV, office, according to a news release.

McFarland earned a B.A. in History from the College of Arts & Sciences at Ohio University.
During his legal career, McFarland has focused his practice almost exclusively on litigation, having handled cases involving professional liability, construction disputes, workplace accidents, premises liability, and other matters relating to workplace safety. He has also represented mining, construction, and general industry companies challenging enforcement actions taken by both state and federal government agencies.
“Ben’s addition to the professional liability team will add depth to an already solid Steptoe & Johnson practice area,” said firm CEO Susan S. Brewer. “His knowledge of federal and state courts, as well as administrative agencies, means that our clients can count on receiving representation in the areas where they need it most.”
McFarland earned his law degree from the University of Toledo College of Law, where he graduated magna cum laude and also received Order of the Coif honors. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He has served as chair of the safety and health subcommittee for the Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia, and has repeatedly been recognized as a Rising Star in the annual West Virginia Super Lawyers publication.
Prior to his legal career, McFarland gained firsthand experience in the construction industry through his employment as a journeyman ironworker, during which time he was involved in the construction of the Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., as well as additions and renovations to a coal-burning power plant in Ohio.
