Dr. Theresa Moran was awarded the 2019 Faculty Sustainability Award on April 18 by the Ohio University Office of Sustainability.

Moran is Food Studies theme director and the Sustainable Living Hub Coordinator.

Two days prior to receiving the Faculty Sustainability Award, Moran spoke at Front Room and discussed her sustainability initiatives for the university as the new Sustainable Living Hub Director on campus. One of these initiatives is continuing efforts to grow and increase student awareness of and involvement with the OHIO Student Farm. The OHIO Student Farm exists not only to provide students with hands-on learning opportunities, but also to source locally and sustainably grown food for students, faculty and staff, and community members.

Moran’s second major initiative for sustainability on campus includes the Farm to OHIO Working Group, an effort to increase university procurement of regional food. This initiative works toward sustainability from multiple angles. On one hand, it’s promoting sourcing food that travels fewer food miles and is grown with sustainable farming practices. Additionally, it supports sustainable economic development in the region.

Beyond these initiatives, Moran teaches Food Studies courses that discuss making more sustainable food choices as individuals, and how people could create more sustainable food systems on larger scales. Food exists as an integral part of sustainability, and Moran and the Food Studies program continuously strive to achieve more sustainable eating and farming on campus and in the Southeast Ohio region.
