Julie Taymor’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream

The Charles J. Ping Institute for the Teaching of the Humanities presents a free one-day workshop for secondary teachers on “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” with Dr. Samuel Crowl on Saturday, March 24, at Ohio University.

Crowl will offer a brief overview of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Performance on stage and film and remarks about Julie Taymor as a film interpreter of Shakespeare. The workshop will then view the film, concentrating on its blend of stage and film techniques in its realization. The afternoon will bring discussion of Taymor’s production and its varied approach to its Shakespearean material.

Crowl is the Trustee Professor of English at Ohio University, where he has taught since 1970. He is the author of six books on Shakespeare in performance on stage and screen and has been five times honored for distinguished teaching.
