The Athens Messenger reported that Ohio University Associate Professors Dr. Eric Stinaff and Dr. Mark Lucas of Physics & Astronomy provided demonstrations on lasers and infrared cameras, along with other activities for the whole family at an event hosted by the Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery.

The Athens Messenger story was headlined “Children and parents discover fun with physics.”

The Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery hosted “Physics Fun” on Saturday, which invited children and parents to learn about light and sound waves in hands-on activities and demonstrations.

The event was part of the museum’s “Fall for Science” weekend series. Each weekend has a different theme that determines what attendees will learn about that particular weekend.

While much of the museum is geared toward young children, Jen Parsons, the museum’s executive director, said that the activities target the entire family.

“It’s fun for everybody,” she said.

Parsons said the museum tries to target its participants with events like Saturday’s to engage them and spark their curiosity for science.
“They learn something here and have fun, but then go home and think about it, and ask questions,” she said.

According to Daniel Ivory, a sophomore astrophysics student at Ohio University, it’s not just the children and parent participants who are learning.

“Everyone is learning, even us college students,” he said. “We’re still amazed by simple things like waves.”

Ivory, who has volunteered at the museum in the past, said that he wants to get the children excited about physics so that they may pursue studying it in the future.
