Messenger Talks to Meteorology Grad Student About the Cold

For some perspective on this week’s cold weather, Athens Messenger reporter Sara Brumfield went to Kyle Clem, Associate Director of the Scalia Laboratory for Atmospheric Analysis and a graduate student in Geography-Meteorology in the College of Arts & Sciences at Ohio University.

Clem said this week’s cold snap won’t be as bad as the polar vortex the region experienced earlier this month….

“It’s still going to be very, very cold,” Clem said, noting that the large amount of snow on the ground will keep temperatures low this week.,,,

Clem said it was a wise decision to cancel college classes as walking in the low temperatures is “flirting with danger,” noting that not everyone has clothing and transportation adequate enough to combat the extreme temperatures. He said it only takes 30 minutes with a wind chill of -19 to get frostbit.
