Dewald Appointed Associate Provost for Faculty and Academic Planning

(Compass, June 26, 2013) Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit announced the appointment of Dr. Howard Dewald as Associate Provost for Faculty and Academic Planning. Dewald currently serves as the Senior Associate Dean in the College of Arts & Sciences at Ohio University.

Dewald was selected for the position in the course of a national search. His tenure as associate provost will begin on July 15.

“Howard is one of the most experienced, most trusted, and most knowledgeable academic administrators at the university. He will be able to step into the position and make substantive contributions immediately,” said Benoit, indicating that Dewald was the ideal candidate for the position.

Dewald has been at Ohio University for nearly 27 years. He has been part of the Arts & Sciences dean’s office since July 2002, first as an associate dean and then as a senior associate dean. In both capacities he has had responsibilities for faculty, graduate studies, research, and space planning in the university’s largest college. Dewald also served as the Interim Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences during the 2011-12 academic year.

A professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Dewald received a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Wyoming and a Ph.D. in chemistry from New Mexico State University.

His area of expertise is in electroanalytical chemistry in which he has an active research agenda resulting in a substantial record of peer-reviewed publications. A recipient of the college’s Grasselli Brown Faculty Teaching Award, Dewald has taught many entry-level and upper-division undergraduate classes and graduate courses. He has also supervised 11 master’s theses and mentored 8 doctoral students.

The associate provost for faculty and academic planning is part of the executive vice provost and president’s senior staff and is responsible for all aspects of faculty life at Ohio University. In addition, Dewald will assist Benoit with policy development and with the implementation of measures designed to enhance the university’s ability to serve students and advance knowledge and creativity.
