Dr. Risa Whitson
The Geography Colloquium Series presents Dr. Risa Whitson on “Embodied Memories of Displacement: Using participatory art and mapping for understanding and reconciliation in Colombia” on Friday, Feb. 7, at 3:05 p.m. in Clippinger 119.
Whitson is an Associate Professor in the Geography Department and Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies at Ohio University. Her research interests include informal and nonstandard work, geographies of birth and reproduction, gender and development, and feminist methodologies.
This presentation focuses on a project undertaken with a group of 10 displaced women in Barranquilla, Colombia, designed to examine the body as a critical site for exploring the experience of displacement and conflict. Whitson will discuss the preliminary findings from this research project, highlighting two aspects of the research: first, how we can understand the violence of migration as an embodied process, and second, how participatory artistic methodologies – including body mapping, photovoice, and participatory video – can be used to expand the way that displacement is understood both by academics and the general public.
