The Geography Colloquium Series presents Dr. Derek Kauneckis on “Networked Federalism: How Subnational Governments are Creating Climate Change Policy” on Friday, Oct. 18, at 3:05 p.m. in Clippinger 119.
Kauneckis is an associate professor at Ohio University’s Voinovich School, where he teaches in the Environmental Studies program. He teaches and conducts research on environmental governance, community response to environmental change, and policy design.
As climate policy at the international level has stalled, and the U.S. national government has become actively antagonistic against climate action, local and state governments have taken the lead. However, to have an impact requires coordination with other jurisdictions. This talk explores the drivers of cooperation across subnational governments. It examines the characteristics of local communities, the types of climate risk, and how they have formed cooperative networks to better respond to the climate threats. It concludes with a discussion of the importance of environmental federalism and the implications of these new networked governance structures for future climate policy.
