Barlag Named President Elect of the Forensic Science Institute of Ohio

Dr. Becky Barlag has been named president-elect of the Forensic Science Institute of Ohio for 2020. In 2021, she will serve a one-year term as the institute’s president.

Barlag is director of the Forensic Chemistry program and Associate Professor of Instruction in Chemistry & Biochemistry at Ohio University.

The Forensic Science Institute of Ohio was founded in 1992, in large part due to the work of former Ohio University faculty member Dr. Jimmy Tong, who passed away in 2019. The purpose of FSIO is to bring together crime laboratory directors and forensic science educators to discuss topics of common forensic interest that affect the state of Ohio.  The institute also promotes research and education in forensic science, and it offers a scholarship in the name of Tong for forensic chemistry majors at Ohio University.

Many alumni of the forensic chemistry program at Ohio University have gone on to work at forensic laboratories throughout the state of Ohio, and several are active members of FSIO. At the latest meeting, FSIO also voted to contribute $1,000 as a memorial to the James Y. and Harriet Tong Forensic Chemistry Scholarship, an annual award that is given out by the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department.

Barlag becomes the first representative from Ohio University to serve as president-elect of FSIO.
