The Contemporary History Institute hosts a lunchtime conversation with a Cold War historian on the future of American foreign policy in an era of renewed great power competition at noon on Thursday, Feb. 17, via Teams.

The conversation will feature noted Cold War historian and former Pentagon advisor Hal Brands, Ph.D. Brands is the Henry A. Kissinger Distinguished Professor of Global Affairs at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments. He will discuss his new book, The Twilight Struggle: What the Cold War Teaches Us about Great-Power Rivalry Today.

“Described as a ‘historian’s guide to great-power conflict,’ The Twilight Struggle argues that American policymakers should look to the history of the Cold War for lessons on how to manage great power competition today. In what is sure to be a lively and informative talk, Dr. Brands will make the case for why a historically informed foreign policy can best serve American interests in a world increasingly defined by instability and conflict,” said Ingo Trauschweizer, Ph.D., institute director and professor of History in the College of Arts & Sciences.

As with all CHI-sponsored events, this talk is free and open to the public.
