Annual History Essay Competition Deadline is March 1

Each year the Ohio University History Department awards the Randolph Stone Prize to reward excellence in the writing of history. Undergraduate students of any major are invited to submit an essay, review, or research paper recently written for any OHIO History Department course.

  • Entries are due Monday, March 1, 2021.

Winners will receive money awards and be recognized at the Annual Undergraduate History Conference on March 26.

Categories & Submission Requirements

Entries may be any length between 5 and 20 pages long. They may be research papers written for HIST 3111J or another course, book reviews or review essays, primary source analyses, or any other assignment from a history course that involves critical analysis and formal writing.

Submit a clean copy (free of instructor’s comments) with citations and bibliography as appropriate. Entries should include a title page indicating your name, title of essay, history course for which the entry was submitted, name of course instructor, and your email address. Your name should appear nowhere else on the document other than the title page. Essays should be typed double-spaced in 12-point font with one-inch margins. Citations and bibliography of cited sources should follow Chicago Style or other standard formatting.

Please follow the submission guidelines carefully. Only one submission per student is allowed. Submit entries via email as a .doc or .docx file to Dr. Kevin Uhalde at uhalde@ohio.edu.
