Dr. Brian Schoen discusses John Brown and the lead-up to his 1859 raid at Harpers Ferry with the Civil War Round Table of the Mid-Ohio Valley on Jan. 16, reports the Parkersburg News and Sentinel.

Schoen is Associate Professor of History at Ohio University.

Schoen, associate professor of history at Ohio University, will present “A-mouldering in the Grave: John Brown’s Raid and the Abolitionists’ Cause on the Eve of the Civil War.”

Schoen will discuss the events leading up to Brown’s famous raid in 1859 of the federal armory in Harpers Ferry.

Schoen will talk about lesser-known facts concerning Brown and his compatriots, including Brown’s “constitution,” his Canadian “founders,” and the British military officer that Brown hired to train his troops but, instead, betrayed Brown’s cause to leading northern politicians. Schoen will discuss James Redpath, a British journalist who eulogized Brown and then dodged federal officials who wanted him to testify at Brown’s trial.
