Translation Club Interprets for Three Visiting Delegations

Since its formation in 2017, the Ohio University Translation Club has been a valuable resource, providing the university with fast and reliable interpreting services. So far, the club has carried out translations and interpreted for three delegations who came to Ohio University to strengthen their partnerships between various programs.

The first delegation was a group of 25 teachers, curriculum directors, principals and superintendents from the Argentina Educators Training Program. They participated in professional development, internship, civic and cultural activities in the fall of 2017. In the spring of 2018, the rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador (PUCE), the provost, two deans and a research professor visited OHIO to continue a joint research project investigating Chagas disease. The third delegation included several deans and professors from the University of Manizales (Colombia) who came to OHIO to collaborate in the “Communication in the Americas III” Symposium in the fall of 2018.

Students from the M.A. in Spanish Literature and Linguistics, as well as undergraduate students, interpreted for a series of conferences, meetings, campus and community tours, casual conversations and more between the delegations. The techniques they used included consecutive interpretation, simultaneous whispering interpretation and sight translation.

Dr. María Postigo, the Translation Club adviser, referred to Violeta Orozco, Spencer Cappelli, Victor Niro, Irene Soto, Sandra Peñuela and other students and colleagues as the “paramedics of translation” due to their crucial work and response when translations are needed quickly.

The club has completed several assignments in Spanish, but the club – and its talks and workshops – is open to members of all languages. Please contact Dr. Postigo at postigo@ohio.edu if you are interested in joining the club or need assistance with translation or interpreting.
