The Spring 2019 courses that fulfill requirements for the Middle East and North Africa Studies Certificate include two courses—Elementary Arabic II and Sufism: Mysticism and Asceticism in Islam.
Please note that in addition to these courses, Honors Tutorial College tutorials, directed studies, and senior theses credits earned through the study of the Middle East and North Africa region or parts therein may also count toward the certificate (pending approval).

ARAB 1120 – Elementary Arabic II

Description: The second-semester course in the two-semester sequence for elementary Arabic.
CLWR 4340 – Sufism: Mysticism and Asceticism in Islam
Tuesdays & Thursdays noon-1:20 p.m.

Professor: Dr. Loren Lybarger
Description: This course introduces the “mystical” dimension of Islam, known as Sufism. It begins by probing key terms such as “Sufism,” “asceticism,” and “mysticism.” Then it traces the emergence of Sufism during the formative period of the Islamic political and religious systems. The bulk of the course explores modern Sufi movements from South/Southeast Asia and Central Asia to Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and the United States.
About the Middle East and North Africa Studies Certificate
The Middle East and North Africa Studies Certificate program is designed to provide an interdisciplinary understanding of the history and contemporary dynamics of the Middle East and North Africa region. The curriculum draws on the expertise of diverse faculty from across the social sciences and humanities whose training, research, and teaching center on the Middle East and North Africa region. This is all the more important to address given the immense importance of the region to a variety of careers, including education, journalism, international affairs, public policy, economic development, and security.
