Science Cafe | Tornadoes: Unraveling the Mysteries of one of Earth’s most Powerful Storms, Feb. 21

Science Café presents Dr. Jana Houser on “Tornadoes: Unraveling the Mysteries of one of Earth’s most Powerful Storms” on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 5 p.m. in the Baker Center Front Room Coffeehouse.

Houser, Assistant Professor of Geography at Ohio University, spent the past 10 years studying tornadoes through the use of traditional and non-traditional radar observations. She will discuss a wide range of topics associated with tornadoes, including what we know about these storms, what we think we know about them, what we still don’t know, and why we don’t know it. She also will present new observations that justify the need for a paradigm shift away from the traditional tornado formation hypothesis of top-down evolution.

Many meteorologists have dedicated their lives to determining how these violent vortices work, and what exactly causes them to form in the first place. Recent advances in computer and observational technology have dramatically increased scientific understanding of these atmospheric phenomena over the past three decades. However, our knowledge is not yet complete.

Sciencé Cafe events are held on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. in the Front Room at Baker University Center. They are free and open to students, faculty and staff. Science Café is a venue for students to share their interests informally during a conversation exchange in a friendly setting.

The Science Café is hosted by Dr. Sarah Wyatt, Professor of Environmental & Plant Biology and Vice President of the Ohio University Chapter of Sigma Xi, and Roxanne Malé-Brune, Director of Grant Development and Projects in the Office of the Vice President for Research and Creativity.

Science Café and Café Conversations are sponsored by the Office of Vice President for Research and Creativity and the Ohio University Chapter of Sigma Xi.
