Alumni News | Plant Biology’s Robert Specker Passes Away

Ohio University alum Robert Specker ’87, who earned a B.S. in Plant Biology from the College of Arts & Sciences, passed away on Dec. 12, according to the Legacy.com obituary:

ATHENS – Robert W. Specker, Jr., 62, of Athens died late Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2017 at The Laurels of Athens after a long illness.

Born May 17, 1955 in El Paso, Texas, he was the son of the late Col. Robert W. Specker (Ret. U.S. Army) and Betty Lou (Armstrong) Specker.

He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Botany from Ohio University and a Master’s Degree from the University of Georgia, also in Botany. He was employed in the University of Georgia’s Botany Department where he curated fungi. He returned to Athens after his retirement, where he was a resident for three years.

Robert is survived by two sisters, Jennifer (Caroline Karp) Specker of Exeter, Rhode Island, and Bonny (Howard Wey) Specker of Brookings, South Dakota; three nieces, Betty Wey, Christine (Joey) Hockett and Emma (Dane) Andersen; a nephew, Andrew Wey; and cousins John Specker and Nicole Keane. He is also survived by longtime, close friends who cared for him – Richard Shultz, Jerri Hill, Pat Mayles, and Penny Ford, all of Athens.

A family service is planned for a later date at the Flag Spring Cemetery in Newtown near Cincinnati. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Humane Society.
