A collaborative research team from Ohio University has received a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as part of the foundation’s “Reinvent the Toilet Challenge.”

The reinvent the toilet challenge aims to create a toilet that removes germs and recovers valuable resources (such as water) from human waste and can operate “off the grid” without connections to water, sewer or electricity.

The group at Ohio University includes Dr. Gerardine Botte, Distinguished Professor in the Center for Electrochemical Engineering Research, Russ College of Engineering and Technology, and Dr. Ronan Carroll, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts & Sciences.

Their project is about “Electrochemical Sensors as a Platform for the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge.”

Their research focuses on using electrochemical sensors to detect the chemical and microbial content of water samples.
