Dynamical Systems Seminar | Discrete Dynamical Systems: Introduction to Symbolic Dynamics, Sept. 27

The Dynamical Systems Seminar features Dr. Winfried Just, Professor of Mathematics, on Sept. 27, at 4:10 p.m. in Morton 127.

He will discuss “Discrete dynamical systems: Introduction to symbolic dynamics.”

Abstract: The study of symbolic dynamics, that is, of systems that are defined in terms of a shift operator on sequences of symbols, is both of intrinsic interest and a source of important tools for the study of arbitrary dynamical systems. This talk will introduce one type of such systems (one-sided subshifts), describe some of their properties, and show how they relate to other dynamical systems.  Some open research problems of current interest to some participants will be posed at the end of the talk.
