Resumé Building Session for Student Organization

By Harlee Rozell, ‘17

The Ohio Student Anthropology Society (OSAS), of which I am a member, hosted the Career and Leadership Development Center workshop on resumé building workshop last Fall.

Jessie Carter, former Assistant Director of the Career and Leadership Development Center for the College of Arts & Sciences, came to one of our weekly meetings, as requested by our officers, and led this workshop.

She explained to us what the CLDC is and why it is important for students at Ohio University – up to this point, I had no inkling it even existed!.

The resumé building workshop, “Bragging Rights,” is part of the Professional Leadership Series workshop. In this workshop, Ms. Carter worked us through the “do’s and don’ts” of creating a professional resumé.

Even though I am a senior here, I have to admit that I had yet to create a resumé at the time that (yikes!).

Although I attempted to take advantage of the writing center in Alden Library, as well as looking at online tutorials on how to build a proper resumé, my attempts were futile.

How had I gone almost four years in college without ever creating a resumé?

It was through the workshop Ms. Carter gave that I was able to understand what should and should not be in a resumé and cover letter. She thoroughly went through the ingredients necessary to create our resumé, discussed ‘buzzwords’ to utilize, showed us funny videos on resumé building and even had each of us brainstorm our own resumés.

Never before had I been tasked to critically think and discuss what should and should not be presented to prospective employers.

I found the one workshop I completed to be more beneficial than all other resumé building methods I had exhausted.

And, let’s be honest, searching “how to make a resumé” in Google really is not the way you should handle something so important for you future!
