The Anthropology program announces ANTH 4560/5560: Ethnographic Methods and Field Research in Spring 2017.
This is an ideal course for students seeking training in qualitative research methods in any field or discipline. Students interested in African American Studies, Economics, Geography, History, Journalism, Media Studies, Political Science, Social Work, WGSS, and other related fields are encouraged to enroll.
The Ethnographic Field Methods course is especially valuable for students considering independent research, honors projects, and competitive fellowships such as Fulbright and Boren, which often require formal methods training.
The course provides practical experience through hands-on exercises in ethnographic methods including:
- Participant observation
- Field notes
- Interviewing and audio recording
- Photography and film
- Oral and life histories
The course is taught by Dr. Matthew Rosen. He received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the New School for Social Research in 2014. He is a cultural anthropologist focusing on visual anthropology and media studies with extensive field research experience in urban India.
ANTH 4560/5560 is open to undergraduate and graduate students. It will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:05-4:25 p.m.
