The Ohio University-Ohio State University Ring Theory Seminar meets on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 4:45 p.m. in Cockins Hall 240 at OSU-Columbus.
The speaker is Ángel del Río Mateos (Universidad de Murcia, Murcia, Spain) on “An introduction to units of integral group rings.”
Please note that this talk takes place on Thursday instead of the usual seminars on Fridays.
Abstract: Let G a finite group. The study of the group of units of the integral group ring of G, denoted U(ZG), has attracted the attention of many researchers since the seminal work of Higman in the 1940’s and Bass and Milnor in the 1960’s. In the last 20 years significant progress has been obtained. For example, in most cases one can give a explicit set of generators of a subgroup of finite index in U(ZG). However there are still fundamental questions to be answered. For example, there are very few groups G for which a precise structure of U(ZG) is known. Another relevant open question is how are finite subgroups of U(ZG). The aim of this talk is to give an introduction to the subject, revising some of the main known results and techniques.
