Philosophy Alum is CEO of Mixed Martial Arts Brand, Live on Spike TV

Bjorn RebneyAt Ohio University, Bjorn Rebney ’89 was a running back on the Bobcats football team and a Philosophy major in the College of Arts & Sciences. Today, he is founder and CEO of Bellator MMA, a mixed martial arts company, according to a story July 21 in the Columbus Dispatch. Rebney also earned a master’s degree in business at Ohio University.

Named after a Latin word for warriors, Bellator began in 2008 and is the second-largest MMA professional brand, with 175 fighters and shows throughout the U.S. Bjorn Rebney, a former Ohio University running back, is the chief executive of Bellator. In 2011, Viacom reportedly paid around $50 million for a majority stake in Bellator. Last year, Bellator debuted a fighter-based reality show on Spike TV. Read more in the Dispatch.

“Bellator MMA is the largest tournament-based mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion in the world. Based in Newport Beach, CA, and partnered with industry-leader Viacom, Bellator hosts “The Toughest Tournament in Sports” live and free on the home for MMA, Spike TV on Thursday nights,” according to the Bellator website. “In 2013, Bellator began broadcasting all its events on the largest and most successful broadcaster in MMA history, Spike TV, with live events airing every Thursday at 10/9pm CT. The television alliance also includes a reality show featuring Bellator talent, Bellator 360 highlight shows and other shoulder programing.”

Bellator MMA’s next live show on Spike TV is Wednesday, July 31. The fight card includes world championship bouts in the lightweight and welterweight divisions. More at Bellator.
