Castillo Models Granular Systems on the Move, Like Crowded Subway Cars

Simulated packing densities with regions of fast (gray) and slow (red) moving particles.

By Raymond Humienny NQPI writing intern Fluidized granular systems show some puzzling behaviors, especially when they are about to get stuck. Ohio University Physics & Astronomy professor and Nanoscale & Quantum Phenomena Institute member Dr. Horacio Castillo is working to understand phenomena happening in dense granular matter. To Castillo, dense […]

Alum, Professor Predict Ways to Better Manipulate Electrons in Graphene

Drs. Mahmoud Asmar and Sergio Ulloa

Two physicists predict that electronic currents of graphene can be split into two parts, thereby allowing scientists to manipulate the properties of graphene in new ways. Ohio University alum Dr. Mahmoud Asmar (Physics PhD ’15), and Dr. Sergio Ulloa, Professor of Physics & Astronomy, and a member of OHIO’s Nanoscale […]

Hla’s Lab Reveals Unexpected Use of Graphene Nanoribbons for Magnetic Interactions

Dr. Saw-Wai Hla at a Scanning Tunneling Microscope

Dr. Saw-Wai Hla and Dr. Sergio Ulloa, Professors of Physics & Astronomy at Ohio University, have published a journal article in Nature Communications about semiconducting graphene nanoribbons that could be better suited than graphene for applications ranging from electronic and optoelectronic devices. The nanoribbons used for this research are strips of graphene […]

Astrophysicist Chornock Contributes to Discovery of Neutron Star Merger

The image sequence above shows infrared imaging from the FLAMINGOS-2 imager and spectrograph for a period of over two weeks. The top row features images in the h-band, a shorter (bluer) wavelength of infrared light. The bottom row focuses mostly on k-band images, which are longer (redder) wavelengths of light. This sequence reveals how the object became redder as it faded from view.
