Summer 2020 | Tier II – Humanities & Literature

Ohio University students can choose from a variety of online courses this summer that meet the Tier II – Humanities & Literature general education requirement.

The following are Arts & Sciences courses that meet Tier II requirements.

Tier II – Humanities & Literature

AAS 2100 Slave Narrative and Freeman/Freewomen Fiction of the 18th and 19th Centuries

  • Summer Session I, starts May 11
  • Gary Holcomb
  • Description: This course covers the African American slave narrative, from the 18th to the 19th centuries, along with free-woman and free-man writings of the later 19th century and possibly the early 20th century. Readings typically include works by such authors as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs, William Wells Brown, and Solomon Northup.

LAT 2110 Intermediate Latin I

  • Summer Session I, starts May 11
  • James Andrews and Neil Bernstein
  • Description: This course continues emphasis on reading skills developed in first year. Readings include numerous prose excerpts from a variety of authors; content primarily concerns Roman history, as well as some poetry.

LAT 2120 Intermediate Latin II

  • Summer Session II, starts June 29
  • Neil Bernstein
  • Description: This course continues emphasis on reading skills developed in Latin 2110. Reading excerpts are from a variety of authors with an emphasis on Roman poetry.

PHIL 1010 Fundamentals of Philosophy

  • Summer Session I, starts May 11
  • Scott Carson
  • Description: This course is a survey of selected basic problems, concepts, and methods in philosophy.

PHIL 1300 Introduction to Ethics

  • Summer Session I, starts May 11
  • Alfred Lent
  • Description: This discussion of classic and/or modern philosophical views of human values, ideals, and morality provides introductory survey of some main problems, concepts, and results of ethics including selected philosophers of past and present.

PHIL 2160 Philosophy of Science Survey

  • Full Summer Session, starts May 11
  • Scott Carson
  • Description: This is a nontechnical survey of types, testing, and credibility of hypotheses; methods of experimental inquiry; measurement; laws, theories and their role in explanation, concept formation.

WGSS 1000 Introduction to Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

  • Summer Session I, starts May 11
  • Kimberly Little
  • Description: In interdisciplinary fundamentals course, students explore a range of perspectives regarding social, political, and cultural constructions of gender and sexuality and their intersection with race, ethnicity, nationality, class, disability, and other elements of diversity.
