The Ohio University NQPI Seminar Series presents Dr. Alexander Eychmüller discussing “Chemistry and Physics of Nanocrystals, 2d Materials and Aerogels” on Wednesday, March 18, at 4:30 p.m. in Clippinger Labs 354.

Eychmüller is a Professor Physical Chemistry at Dresden University of Technology in Dresden, Germany.

Abstract: As the title infers the talk aims to provide an overview of the activities of my group in Dresden. This will begin with some historical remarks on the so-called size quantization in semiconductor (SC) nanocrystals (NC) that has been found and explained correctly some 35 years ago. Since then enormous progress has been made in various directions: quality of the materials (measured as size dispersity, crystallinity, compositional variability, surface functionalization, etc.), applications (in lighting, bioenvironments, solar cells, etc.), as well as basic theoretical understanding. These applications will already include those relying on surface functionalization and, hence, incorporation of particles into various matrices.

The topics to be touched upon will include the synthesis and characterization of semiconductor nanoplatelets as representatives of 2D nano materials and our efforts of ion exchange thereon. The latter will also be shown in perovskite NC in a solid state reaction setup.

The arranging and incorporation of nanocrystals of various compositions into larger structures and/or matrices will cover the largest part of the presentation. Matrices to be named will be of biological nature as well as of various inorganic (e.g. salts) and organic ones. Films of SC nanocrystals are formed either with a Langmuir-Blodgett-type system or via spin- or spray-coating. Ordered superstructures of SC NC (mesocrystals) are observed and their formation mechanism is studied.

In the remainder of the talk I will present some of the results of our activities related to gels and aerogels of NC. Here, I will also touch upon formation mechanisms, properties and applications especially in the field of electrocatalysis. And finally, I will show how plasmonic NC and aerogels can be combined in a “plasmonic heating” system.
