Note: This event has been rescheduled for Oct. 30, 2019.

The Center for Law, Justice & Culture and the Ohio Innocence Project chapter of Ohio University (OIP-u), in conjunction with with the Ohio Innocence Project at University of Cincinnati College of Law, host exoneree Raymond Towler on the sixth annual Wrongful Conviction Day on Oct. 30, 2019 at 6 p.m. in Bentley 124.

Wrongful Conviction Day is a day to raise awareness to the causes and remedies of wrongful convictions; as well as the tremendous personal, social, and emotional costs wrongful convictions bring to the innocent people and their families.

Towler was wrongfully incarcerated for rape, assault, and kidnapping. In 1981, an armed gunman had raped an 11-year-old girl in a Cleveland Park, while holding a gun to the female’s young male cousin. A few weeks later, Towler was stopped for a traffic violation and ultimately arrested for the rape, assault, and kidnapping of the young girl because the officer believed he matched the rape-suspect drawing. The suspect and witnesses positively identified Towler from a photo array, and he ended up spending 29 years of his life sentence before he was exonerated by the Ohio Innocence Project with the use of DNA evidence.

Towler will be coming to campus to discuss his experiences with wrongful conviction and miscarriages of justice.
