Happy Beginnings | Monsted Named Assistant Curator of Virginia Native Plant Trail

Editor’s Note: The Happy Beginnings series features recent College of Arts & Sciences graduates who are getting started in careers, graduate school and service.

Jack Monsted ’19M recently moved into a new job. He is now the assistant curator at the State State Arboretum of Virginia, part of the University of Virginia’s Blandy Experimental Farm.

He has taken over the development and management of the Nancy Larrick Crosby Native Plant Trail.

Monsted earned an M.S. in Plant Biology from the College of Arts & Sciences at Ohio University, where he worked in Dr. Glenn Matlack’s lab.

“His master’s thesis was in the field of forest plant ecology, with a special focus on how native plant communities respond to historical human land use,” according to the Arbor Vbitae Summer 2019 newsletter of the Foundation of the State Arboretum.

“Prior to that, he worked as an organic crop inspector for the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association for four years, performing annual inspections for organic farms throughout the mid-Atlantic region. He received his B.A. in environmental geography from the Ohio State University. He grew up near Harrisburg, Pa., and is an avid hiker and rock climber.”
