Samantha Selhorst, an Honors Tutorial College senior in Neuroscience, received the top award for Outstanding Senior Thesis on May 3 at the HTC graduate reception.

Her thesis is titled “Endothelial deletion of Rbpj leads to perivascular abnormalities in the brain.” Selhorst completed her senior thesis research in the laboratory of Dr. Corinne Nielsen, Biological Sciences.

Selhorst’s research focused on pericytes, cells that are tightly associated with blood vessels in the brain. She studied consequences to pericyte coverage of blood vessels, in the context of a neurovascular disease called brain arteriovenous malformation. Her research will help to unravel how this disease forms and progresses – the first step toward developing treatments for this condition.

This Fall, Selhorst will attend the University of Maryland School of Medicine and begin working toward her MD. Congratulations, Samantha!
