Ohio Universtiy’s Chemistry and Biochemistry Colloquium Series presents Dr. Justin Legleiter on “The Impact of Surfaces on Protein Aggregation Associated with Neurodegenerative Disease” on Monday, Jan. 28, at 4:10 p.m. in Clippinger 194.

Legleiter is Associate Professor at The C. Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry at West Virginia University.

Abstract:  There is a vast number of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease and Huntington’s disease, associated with the rearrangement of the structure of specific proteins, promoting their aggregation. These diseases are commonly classified as protein misfolding or amyloid diseases. A fundamental phenomenon with potential implications for the toxicity associated with these protein aggregates is their interaction with cellular membranes that are predominately comprised of lipids. Using a variety of microscopic surface imaging techniques, we are determining how aggregated proteins related to Alzheimer’s disease and Huntington’s disease bind to lipid membranes and alter their physical properties.
