The Wealth and Poverty theme presents the Ohio University Week on Immigrants, featuring Dr. Roy Boyd on “Understanding the Mexican Economy in the Era of Trump” on Friday, Feb. 8, from 3 to 4 p.m. in Alden 319.
Dr. Roy Boyd
Boyd is a Professor of Economics at Ohio University. He received his B.A. in economics from the University of New Mexico and his M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Duke University. His areas of specialty include resource economics, international trade, and Computable General Equilibrium Modeling.
Abstract: In this presentation the authors look at income distributional issues. They discuss the reasons for Mexico’s highly skewed distribution, and they discuss the cultural, social, economic and geographical factors that have led to this situation. They also model social mobility over several generations and compare the social mobility found in Mexico with that of other countries such as the US and England. Finally, they look at the manner in which the Mexican Government has dealt with its poverty problems in the past, and they discuss the most efficient ways in which Mexico can improve the living standards of its population in the future.
