Editor’s Note: The Happy Beginnings series features recent College of Arts & Sciences graduates who are getting started in careers, graduate school and service.

For most students applying to law school, the period between submitting their law school applications and finally deciding where to attend is filled with anticipation, uncertainty, and anxiety. For Ohio University Senior Jacob Pullar, that period concluded with excitement.

Pullar is a Geography-Environmental Pre-Law major who was recently accepted into Vermont Law School, which was ranked #1 in Environmental Law Programs in 2017 by U.S. News & World Report.

Pullar first became interested in environmental issues during his senior year of high school. He made the decision to go to law school after switching majors to Geography Environmental Pre-Law. He realized, after taking courses in the Geography Department and Dr. Jennifer Fredette’s The Politics of Law Class, as well as discussions with his faculty advisor, Dr. Brad Jokisch, that he wanted to use the legal system to help to protect the environment.

In making this decision to apply to law school, Pullar availed himself of the many resources available to students interested in law at Ohio University. He attended the annual Law School Fair in October 2017, where he was able to meet with admissions representatives from Vermont and other law schools. There he was able to discuss his interests with law schools he was interested in and learn about different law schools. He also was able to practice taking the Law School Admissions Test, or LSAT, during  LSATurday, a free practice LSAT that is administered each semester by the Center for Law, Justice & Culture and University of Toledo College of Law. In addition, Pullar met with the CLJC Pre-Law Advisor & Specialist Larry Hayman several times to discuss his interest in law school, the LSAT, and the law school application process.

Pullar says that he looks forward to having a change of scenery and a new place for adventure in Vermont, all while chasing his dream.

“Do not be afraid of law school or the process of applying,” says Pullar. “Law school can seem intimidating, but if it is something you really want to do, or might be interested in, explore it with confidence.”

For students considering law school, Hayman has office hours on Wednesdays from 1-4 p.m. in the Center for Law, Justice & Culture, located on the ground floor of Bentley Hall.
