Larry Hayman, Pre-Law Advisor and Specialist for the Center for Law, Justice & Culture, was awarded a grant from the Ohio State Bar Foundation for the center’s annual Summer Law & Trial Institute.

“We are thrilled to have received the grant from the Ohio State Bar Foundation to continue SLTI’s important mission,” Hayman said. “This year, we hope to continue to expand both the geographic footprint of the program and the number of students we will be able to serve.”

About the Summer Law & Trial Institute

Launched in 2016, the Summer Law & Trial Institute is a 13-day immersive residential program on Ohio University’s Athens campus that improves access to legal education for economically disadvantaged students, primarily from Appalachian Ohio, through collaboration with the legal community, academia, state and local government, and non-governmental organizations.

Additionally, the program seeks to directly address the complex legal challenges associated with social and economic inequality in the region. The program, which will run again in July 2018, was developed by Hayman ’03, who is also an Ohio University alum, having earned a B.A. in Political Science from the College of Arts & Sciences.

The program is the first of its kind in the region and was conceptualized to give high school students exposure to law, the legal profession and higher education, and to encourage them to pursue legal careers. At the same time, SLTI seeks to address issues confronting legal education, the access to justice gap, educational attainment in Appalachia, poverty in Appalachia, and barriers to access to educational attainment. During their two weeks at OHIO, students will:

  • Connect with judges and attorneys in the area as well as other professionals within the legal realm.
  • Engage in rigorous academic coursework on law and the American legal system.
  • Learn via field trips and on-site courtroom observation.
  • Meet with Ohio University faculty and staff.

Students are able to attend the two-week program for free as a result, in part, of the Ohio State Bar Foundation grant.

The Ohio State Bar Foundation seeks to advance “the philanthropic interest of Ohio’s Lawyers to recognize excellence, improve the justice system and enhance public understanding of the law throughout Ohio.” To apply for the Ohio State Bar Foundation grant, applicants submitted proposals detailing an organizational background, a project description and budget, a organizational budgets and any supplemental documents.

Program dates and the SLTI application portal will be announced in Spring 2018.
