Ari Blumer presented “Methods for Growth and In-Situ Observation of Monolayer TMD Growth”at the 2017 Ohio University Society of Physics Students Research Conference held in March .

Blumer is working with Dr. Martin Kordesch to build a system consisting of a furnace with an open area for viewing the growth of MoS2 crystals at up to 1000 C. The growth of these crystals is currently a “recipe” driven art.  The actual process is usually hidden in the furnace, and the results are unreliable.  Blumer is looking at the process as it occurs, so that the growth of the material can be better controlled or tailored to the requirements of applications.

“I learned best practices for growing MoS2 and WS2 2-dimensional crystals through Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD),” says Blumer. “I also found that CVD-grown MoS2 crystals will evaporate at high temperatures unless in a high-pressure sulfuric atmosphere. I met with my advisor almost day I was in the lab, in order to bounce ideas back and forth or discuss results. Working with Dr. Kordesch is a great experience. He gives you the freedom to develop your own ideas and thoughts, but is such a wealth of knowledge for anything you might need.”
