Hirschfield presents on theories of the criminalization of school discipline. This talk also concerns the relationship between schools and prisons and what we should make of current local, state, and federal efforts to dismantle this relationship, such as decriminalizing school discipline.

More broadly, Hirschfield researches a wide range of topics relating to crime and justice with an emphasis on their relationship to youth, education and social policy. His current research explores the impact of mainstream and alternative school re-enrollment on the reentry success of young ex-offenders in New York City.
