Hendrix Pens Op-Ed on COVID Relief for Thousands Released from Prison

Ohio University alumna Clara Hendrix ’20, now pursuing an M.A. in Sociology at OHIO, authored an op-ed in the Athens News headlined There is no COVID-19 relief for thousands being released from U.S. prisons.

As the devastating effects of COVID-19 continue to ravage the country, there have been endless calls from public health experts to reduce the number of people incarcerated in prisons. States have started to reduce prison populations to protect the lives of incarcerated individuals, but their efforts have been minimal. It is important to take advantage of this unique moment for the future of our prison system and work to permanently reduce prison populations….

Hendrix worked on the op-ed for Sociology 6090: Sociology of Prisoner Reentry, where students write opinion pieces that translate social science research on prisoner reentry to the public. The course is taught by Dr. Nicole Kaufman, Assistant Professor of Sociology.

She earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of Arts & Sciences at OHIO, doubling majoring in Psychology and Sociology-Criminology.
