Note: This event has been canceled.

The Linguistics Colloquium series presents Dr. Chris Thompson discussing “It’s NOT Dark: Bōsai ([Tsunami] Disaster Prevention) Tourism in Tarō, Japan” on Friday, April 3, from 12:55 to 1:50 p.m. in Gordy 301.

Thompson is Associate Professor of Linguistics and director of the Japan study abroad with Chubu University, the Hokuriku summer language program, and the Iwate Prefectural University program.

Abstract:  Using new theoretical perspectives from tourism anthropology, Thompson argues that unlike the stereotypical Dark Tourism associated with many post-disaster sites worldwide, Bōsai Tourism in Tarō builds around local place-based practices and traditional community knowledge.  This not only provides a positive, satisfying and hopeful experience for visitors, but gives local residents tangible social, economic, and political goals to strive for as they embrace the future with pride designed to transform local tragedy into a local triumph.
