Science Cafe | Will Cool Lizards Succumb to a Hot Climate, Feb. 5

Science Café presents Dr. Donald Miles discussing “Will Cool Lizards Succumb to a Hot Climate” on Feb. 5 at 5 p.m. in the Front Room at Baker University Center.

Miles, Professor of Biological Sciences at Ohio University, will discuss recent efforts of detect the risk of extinction in lizards and other reptiles and potential opportunities to “rescue” species.

Lizards are “cold-blooded” animals that rely on heat from the external environment to regulate their body temperatures. However, a warming climate challenges the ability of lizards to avoid overheating. Miles and his lab examine the capacity of lizards to live in novel, warmer habitats.

Miles and his students are studying the flexibility that lizards and other cold-blooded reptiles may have in coping with environmental change that exceeds the pace of known evolutionary adaptation. Using natural history data, laboratory experiments and modeling, they predict the extinction risk of reptiles in the United States and globally.

Science Café events are held on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. in the Front Room at Baker University Center. They are free and open to students, faculty and staff. Science Café is a venue for students to share their interests informally during a conversation exchange in a friendly setting.

The Science Café is hosted by Dr. David Ingram, Professor and Chair of Physics & Astronomy, and Roxanne Malé-Brune, Director of Grant Development and Projects in the Office of the Vice President for Research and Creativity.

Science Café and Café Conversations are sponsored by the Office of Vice President for Research and Creativity and the Ohio University Chapter of Sigma Xi.
