Is living in the era of “The Jetsons” closer to reality than depicted in the cartoon of the ’60s-’80s? If so, how will drivers interface with both connected vehicles–those that communicate to other vehicles and infrastructure–and automated vehicles–those that assume control of one or more driving tasks?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the leading cause of death of Americans between the ages of 4 and 34 is traffic crashes. It is anticipated that 80 percent of those crashes can be mitigated with connected and automated vehicles.

The costs of congestion in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is $160 billion per year. Improved utilization of roadway systems can reduce these costs substantially.

Science Café events are held on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. in the Front Room at Baker University Center. They are free and open to students, faculty and staff. Science Café is a venue for students to share their interests informally during a conversation exchange in a friendly setting.

The Science Café is hosted by Dr. David Ingram, Professor and Chair of Physics & Astronomy, and Roxanne Malé-Brune, Director of Grant Development and Projects in the Office of the Vice President for Research and Creativity.

Science Café and Café Conversations are sponsored by the Office of Vice President for Research and Creativity and the Ohio University Chapter of Sigma Xi.
