Science Cafe | Prevalence and Pitfalls of Seeking Emotional Support in Religious Organizations, Oct. 2

Science Café presents Dr. Rebekah Crawford discussing “The Prevalence and Pitfalls of Seeking Emotional Support in Religious Organizations” on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 5 p.m. in the Front Room at Baker University Center.

Crawford is Visiting Professor, Social and Public Health at Ohio University.

What would you do if you desperately needed to talk to a counselor but could not wait for an appointment or did not have enough money to pay the bill? Despite attempts to provide universal healthcare, many people in the U.S. are left without affordable access to mental health care. In some cases, people turn to their religious communities and spiritual advisors for emotional support.

In some ways, religious communities are ideal for supporting the mental wellness of their members. But in other ways, religious communities can promote ideas that constrain emotional

Science Café events are held on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. in the Front Room at Baker University Center. They are free and open to students, faculty and staff. Science Café is a venue for students to share their interests informally during a conversation exchange in a friendly setting.

The Science Café is hosted by Dr. David Ingram, Professor and Chair of Physics & Astronomy, and Roxanne Malé-Brune, Director of Grant Development and Projects in the Office of the Vice President for Research and Creativity.

Science Café and Café Conversations are sponsored by the Office of Vice President for Research and Creativity and the Ohio University Chapter of Sigma Xi.
