The Environmental & Plant Biology Colloquium Colloquium Series presents Dr. Diego Alvarado-Serrano on ” Exploring environmental influences on herbicide resistance evolution in a noxious invasive weed” on Friday, Nov. 8, in Porter 104 from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m.

Alvarado-Serrano is Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at Ohio University.

Abstract: The evolution of herbicide resistance offers a unique opportunity to study plant adaptation in action. Of particular interest is how the micro-evolutionary forces driving the spread of resistance are simultaneously conditioned by both extrinsic (environmental context) and intrinsic (genomic constitution) factors. Elucidating this interplay between environmental context and the genomic constitution of populations should not only contribute to mitigate what is nowadays one of the biggest challenges to food production, but also offer valuable insights into how species adapt to novel environments. In this talk, I will illustrate how this complex interplay can be comprehensively studied by reviewing a series of complimentary studies focused on understanding the evolution and maintenance of herbicide resistance in common morning-glory (Ipomoea purpurea). In particular, I will focus on how landscape and population genomics, spatial analyses, and phenotypic analyses can be integrated to better capture the complex dynamic of plants’ adaptive responses.
