Ohio University Environmental & Plant Biology doctoral student Rael Otuya attended the Association for International Agriculture and Rural Development conference in Nashville, Tenn. This was the second year Otuya was invited to the conference and participated in the Future Leaders Forum on a scholarship honoring her work in international rural development.

Eleven other Future Leaders alumni were chosen from universities across the country to be a part of this year’s forum, which began in 2007. The alumni talked with board members and brainstormed ways to advance rural agriculture and sustainability on a global scale. Otuya is happy she was invited to learn about other students’ innovations in her field and collaborate with them to find solutions to global issues.

Otuya previously earned her master’s degree in plant and soil science from Texas Tech University. Her doctoral work with Dr. Jared DeForest, Associate Professor of Environmental & Plant Biology, examines how pH and phosphorus levels in soil are affected by climate change. In the future, she is open to working on rural development from anywhere in the world.
