Happy Beginnings | Hartsough Enjoys Career as HR Specialist

Samantha Hartsough

Editor’s Note: The Happy Beginnings series features recent College of Arts & Sciences graduates who are getting started in careers, graduate school and service.

Samantha Hartsough ’16, ’17M is a Human Resources Specialist with Sherwin-Williams Performance Coatings Group and recruits for all of their early talent programs.

Hartsough says that her employer has empowered her to recruit “with my own spin.” She is able to be creative and truly make a difference in the company. She is bringing on their newest talent – people who could be with the company for another 30 years.

“This means I have an impact on what the company looks like in the future,” she explains.

“I love working with Sherwin-Williams because the company truly invests in its employees,” says Hartsough, who attends career fairs and also interviews and hires recent graduates for their early talent training programs, as well as all of their internships and co-ops.

She graduated with a double major in Psychology and Sociology-Criminology then earned an M.A. in Sociology from the College of Arts & Sciences at Ohio University.

Her supervisor at Sherwin-Williams has been incredibly helpful as Hartsough learns the company and all of the roles. She is in charge of creating the recruiting calendar, including determining which school career fairs to attend. She also determines the interview and recruiting process.

Her OHIO Experience

She says her experience at OHIO increased her critical thinking and problem solving skills. With recruiting, creative thinking and putting out fires are daily requirements.

“I also find that my sociology degree has allowed me to see the world through a different lens and helps me better understand candidates’ points of view and allows me to be a better HR professional,” she explains.
