Environmental & Plant Biology Welcomes John Schenk

Dr. John Schenk

The Environmental & Plant Biology Department welcomes Dr. John Schenk as a new assistant professor.

Schenk joined the department in August of 2019. Prior to his new appointment, he held an assistant professorship at Georgia Southern University, where he was also the curator of the herbarium.

He earned a B.S. degree in Botany at Oregon State University and a Ph.D. in Botany at Washington State University. Following his dissertation work on the systematics and evolution of Mentzelia (Loasaceae), he was a postdoctoral fellow at Florida State University and Tulane University.  His research seeks to understand the evolutionary origins of morphological variation and species diversity.

Schenk was born in Long Beach, Calif., but later moved to Connecticut. He is joined in Athens by his wife, Dr. Xizhen “Jenny” Schenk, who is Assistant Professor of Instruction in Geological Sciences, and his 4-year-old son, Emerson.
