Dr. Gaurav Sinha, Associate Professor of Geography, was recently assigned as an affiliate faculty researcher with the National Terrain Mapping research group at the USGS Center of Excellence for Geospatial Information Science.

Earlier, Sinha was awarded a CEGIS grant to fund his sabbatical research in 2017-18. This funded projected resulted in multiple conference presentations and research papers. The affiliate status given to Sinha is recognition of the long-term potential of collaboration between Sinha and CEGIS.

Sinha expects to work with his collaborators at CEGIS (and other affiliate academic researchers) on multiple projects related to ontology-driven terrain and hydrology data modeling, natural language based terrain information retrieval, and assessing potential of machine learning for improving automated terrain mapping. He already has recruited three students to help him advance these research projects. He will be actively recruiting several graduate and undergraduate students in the next few years to develop and test innovative analytical methods that will transform conventional terrain analysis and expand the scope of geographic information science.
