Happy Beginnings | Cones Awarded NSF Fellowship, Plans for Ph.D.

Editor’s Note: The Happy Beginnings series features recent College of Arts & Sciences graduates who are getting started in careers, graduate school and service.

Biological Sciences alum Seth Cones ’18 was recently awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

Cones earned a B.S.in Biological Sciences – Marine, Freshwater & Environmental Biology, with Departmental Honors. He also earned a certificate in Geographic Information Science.

Cones plans to continue his Ph.D. studies in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute joint graduate program in the Sensory Ecology and Bioacoustics Lab under T. Aran Mooney.

Cones completed a senior honors thesis titled “Non-invasive tagging methods induce no vocal stress response in long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas). “
