Abstract: Conventional field effect transistors control transmission by controlling the charge flow of carriers. In two-dimensional materials with hexagonal crystal symmetry, there is a new electronic degree of freedom called valley, which represents different pockets of electrons in the momentum space. Electrons in different valleys behave differently.

Similar to electron spin, the manipulation of the valley degree of freedom can potentially provide opportunities to create new device concepts. This field is known as valleytronics and is an active direction in two-dimensional material research. In this talk, I will describe our work in creating ballistic quantum wires with valley-contrasting properties and then use them to construct a topological valley valve and a tunable electron beam splitter. The high quality and versatile controls of the system open the door to many exciting possibilities in valleytronics and in pursuing fundamental physics of one-dimensional systems.
