Food Studies hosted the first of a series of four Discovery Kitchen Workshops on Jan. 24 in collaboration with Community Food Initiatives and the Patton College’s Human & Consumer Sciences Department.
Visiting Assistant Professor Thomas Stevenson’s Restaurant, Hotel and Tourism students assisted with the workshop, held in McCracken Hall Test Kitchen. The event was open to the Ohio and Athens community.
The Discovery Kitchen Program is an intrinsic part of CFI. The organization hosts Discovery Kitchens throughout the community, demonstrating cooking techniques, sharing recipes and educating people about preparing healthy meals with local and seasonal ingredients. The series of workshops to be held at OHIO are funded through a Sugarbush Foundation grant, awarded to Food Studies theme director Dr. Theresa Moran, Rural Action and CFI.
The first Discovery Kitchen was a great success. Thirty participants, guided in knife skills and vegetable preparation by Stevenson and CFI’s staff, prepared black bean burgers and sweet potato fries. The menu reflected what local and seasonal ingredients.
