Welcome back to all our current students and faculty affiliates!

We have an exciting spring semester ahead.

Among the highlights, the Baker Peace Conference (“Temple of Peace? International Cooperation and Stability since 1945”) will take place on March 28-29 with a stellar cast of speakers and panelists. We’re welcoming back three of our Ph.D.s as panel moderators: Laura Seddelmeyer, Steven Wills, and Seth Givens.

Our “Coming Home from War” conversations are also taking form: the groups of veterans (with some 35 participants overall) will happen in Athens and on the Dublin campus in late January and February. Along with the group meetings, which are private, we’re offering public programming: a Feb. 2 (1-3 p.m.) stage reading of Ajax at the Athena Theatre, a March 2 (1-3:30 p.m.) screening of an episode of the Ken Burns and Lynn Novick Vietnam War documentary at the Southeast Ohio History Center (both events include discussions after the play/documentary), and an April 4 evening keynote by David Finkel (“The Good Soldiers” and “Thank You for Your Service”).

Of course, we are also offering CHI talks. On Feb. 28 we’ll welcome Felix Boecking, who will talk about trade and economics in China (1920s-40s). On March 7 we have a book talk by the History Department’s Joshua Hill. And on April 15 (a Monday) we’ll try a late morning talk, by the eminent environmental historian John R. McNeill.

Finally, I’d like to reflect on recent events that showcase the success of our graduates. In this newsletter you can read about Jack Marchbanks’s appointment as Director of the Ohio Department of Transportation. We also celebrate Seth Givens, who won the 2019 John A. Adams ’71 Center Cold War essay prize.
