Ohio University alum Maria Romasco Moore’s new book, Ghostographs: An Album (Rose Metal Press), received enthusiastic accolades.

New York Times book reviewer Amal El-Mohtar praises the book’s originality and hybridity, noting in particular the multimodal combination of text and images.

“Each story takes up a single page opposite an image, and these linked snapshots offer glimpses into one child’s life in a surreal small town where girls glow, people grow stalk-still in tall grass and babies are occasionally delivered by mail. […] The experience is very much that of sitting with a distant family member and turning fragile pages, telling tales as remote in time as they are rooted in memory. Ghostographs felt profoundly unsettling in its familiarity. I’ve never read anything like it,” El-Mohtar writes.

Romasco Moore describes the book as “an interconnected collection of flash fiction inspired by vintage photographs.” She notes that she first learned of Rose Metal Press during her time as an undergraduate at OHIO.

“I took a wonderful course in flash fiction taught by Dr. Joe Plicka, and he used The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Writing Flash Fiction as the textbook,” Romasco Moore states.

“At OHIO I managed to design my own major, so I took courses in creative writing, photography, psychology, and genetic science! Ghostographs is another expression of my interest in multidisciplinary/multimedia work,” she adds. She graduated from OHIO’s University College with a combined degree in Creative Writing and Biology/Genetics.

Romasco Moore ’10 currently teaches at the Columbus College of Art and Design. Her first novel, Some Kind of Animal, will be published by Delacorte Press in 2020. She is a graduate of the Clarion West Writer’s Workshop, and she holds an MFA from Southern Illinois University.

Ghostographs: An Album is available via Rose Metal Press, Amazon, and other booksellers.
