The Undergraduate Mathematics Seminar series features Dr. Greg Foley discussing “Visualizing Operations on Complex Numbers” on Thursday, Sept. 13, from 5:15 to 6:10 p.m. in Morton 322.

Foley is the Robert L Morton chair of Teacher Education in the Patton College of Education at Ohio University.

Abstract: Just as we can represent real numbers as points on a line, we can represent complex numbers as geometric objects in a plane. This provides insight into addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, powers, and roots of complex numbers—and even allows new ways to conceptualize real numbers.

Talks in this seminar series are designed to be accessible to undergraduate mathematics majors, but all are welcome to attend. See more about this seminar series.
